Wallace “Call me Wally” Shawn was opening “The Designated Mourner” at the Seattle Film Festival and the critics had pretty much shredded it. He was late and apologized, explaining that not only did no one seem to like his movie, the making of which had left him deeply in debt but the TV show “Clueless,” which he was about to co-star in, had suddenly and inexplicably dropped him from the cast. His agent had just called with the “good news.” We were quiet for a bit. Then he leaned forward and quietly asked, “So, how’s your day going?”
